Rawlins demands an ethos of respect and a calm, purposeful and disciplined college environment.
Rawlins has a clear dress code which is designed to encourage belonging, pride, safety, security and respect.
Expectations
All students and staff must adhere to the uniform/dress code. There are no exceptions.
Students must wear full uniform for off site activities and visits unless otherwise advised.
Year 10
and 11
Compulsory at all times:

White shirt/blouse tucked in at the waist and buttoned to the neck
·
Rawlins tie, knotted to the neck with the logo showing fully beneath the knot
·
Plain black trousers (not denim) or knee length black skirt (not denim)
·
Black footwear (no coloured markings or logos)
Compulsory between October half term break and Easter break (optional during summer months):

Rawlins navy blue blazer
Optional items
·
In addition to the compulsory items above, students
may wear a Rawlins pullover, Rawlins cardigan or Rawlins slipover. These items are navy blue and bear the Rawlins logo.
Any other such items (e.g. a black cardigan) are not permitted
Years 12 and 13
Students must be suitably dressed for work. All are encouraged to wear school uniform but this is not mandatory. Students who choose not to wear uniform must wear clothing that is clean, smart and does not cause embarrassment (by being too revealing) or offence to others. Dress should be modest and logos or writing on clothing should be unobtrusive and inoffensive.

Jewellery

One small stud may be worn in each ear and nose – no other facial or body piercing is permitted

Ear expanders, dangling or hooped earrings are not permitted.
Hair
Hair should be “natural” colours, including highlights.
Bright dyed hair and extreme hair styles (e.g. Mohican) are not permitted.

Rewards for meeting expectations
Students are awarded a house point at the end of every week that they have fully met expectations
Sanctions when expectations are not met
Coaches check uniform and dress code every morning. A student arriving inappropriately dressed will:

Be given a lunchtime detention

Coach enters detention on SIMS

Coach informs student of day and location (normally the same day unless good reason)

House Team Leaders organise daily detention

Be sent home to change at the earliest opportunity (as soon as parents can be informed)

or period one on-call contacts parents to:
i.
reinforce the dress code
ii.
arrange for parents to deliver suitable dress to reception or
iii.
arrange for student to go home to change –
parents must know this is happening

inform student what is happening

Be withdrawn from their normal curriculum until they are appropriately dressed

If for any reason the dress is not resolved, the student is taken to the inclusion centre until the situation is resolved. Work can be collected work from teachers, but the student
must not join classes
Staff
Staff should dress appropriately for work and in a manner which sets high standards for students.
Responsibilities
Students
Must wear the uniform/dress code and meet high standards of dress and appearance.
Coaches
Must encourage high standards of dress and apply the uniform/dress code rigorously and consistently using the appropriate sanctions when a student fails to meet expectations.
House team leaders
Must encourage high standards of dress, aiming to be the “best dressed house” monitor the application of this policy by coaches and support those experiencing resistance from students or parents. Arrange a daily detention for students who fail to meet expectations.
Leadership team
Must encourage high standards of dress throughout the college and at all times, supporting house team leaders in applying the policy through coaches.
Evaluate the impact of the dress code upon standards.
All staff
Must set high standards of dress personally and encourage students to maintain high standards. All staff are expected to challenge all students whenever expectations are not met applying appropriate sanctions.
Governors
Review this policy every 2 years (next due in June 2012).
